Future plans for traveling on the road? The United States Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao shares the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's driving safety tips:
- Perform a basic safety check and routine maintenance for your vehicle.
- Check to see if there are recalls on your vehicle.
- Stay focused on driving.
- Stay alert and share the road with motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
On the move with young children? Ensure kid’s car seats or booster seats are age and size appropriate, are not expired, and have not been recalled, visit https://www.safercar.gov/parents/CarSeats/Car-Seat-Recalls.htm?view=full.
If traveling with pets take precaution. Pets can distract your attention and should not be seated in your lap nor the front seat. Should a pet get bounced around, they could be thrown into the windshield or compromise operating your gas and brake pedals. In an accident when the airbags deploy your pet could become very injured. Additional considerations when traveling with pets - windows should be up high enough to prevent pets from putting their heads out the window. This will limit debris in their eyes and lessen other drivers from being distracted. For your animal's care, crate or harness them in the back seat.
For all passengers, be aware of the temperature. Temperatures inside the car can elevate to deadly levels within minutes. Prevent this dangerous situation and do not leave family or pets unattended.
